Underwriters Laboratories has established a new partnership with the International Fire Safety Consortium (IFSC) and the University of Maryland (UMD) to advance fire safety engineering, scientific research, knowledge exchange, and global collaboration to address unresolved fire safety problems worldwide.

For Fire Prevention Month, taking place in October, UL Firefighter Safety Research Institute (FSRI) has released a video to demonstrate the remarkable speed of a home fire and encourage people to adopt critical fire safety behaviors to give them more time to respond and escape in the event of a fire. In addition to the video, UL FSRI also released the results of its annual fire safety survey demonstrating the need for more awareness among the general public around the issue of fire safety.

The interactive educational guide “Clearing the Air on COVID-19” highlights how aerosols are produced and provides guidance to improve indoor air quality.

While firefighters face a variety of acute risks in their jobs, the two most pressing health vulnerabilities for today’s fire service are occupational exposure to carcinogens (associated cancer risk) and sudden cardiac events (during or shortly after firefighting). Over the past five years, the NIOSH-IFSI-UL-Skidmore research team has completed a series of studies to comprehensively evaluate these risks to firefighters during modern residential fires and common training fires, evaluated exposures and heat stress by job assignment, attack tactic and type of fire, and assessed decontamination procedures for personal protective equipment (PPE) and skin.
