UL Research Institutes Announces Retirement of President and CEO Terrence R. Brady

EVANSTON, Ill. – Dec. 13, 2023 – UL Research Institutes, a global leader in safety science research, announced today that Terrence R. Brady, president and chief executive officer, will retire at the end of the year following more than 12 years of service within the UL enterprise.

Brady joined UL in 2011 as senior vice president and general counsel and became senior vice president and chief commercial and legal officer in 2015. In 2018, he was appointed president of Underwriters Laboratories with responsibility for leading its operations, strategy and growth. In 2020, Brady became president and CEO of Underwriters Laboratories as well as a trustee of the organization.

Under Brady’s leadership, Underwriters Laboratories expanded its safety science research and standards development capabilities, launched new initiatives to address emerging and complex safety challenges and strengthened the organization’s collaboration with stakeholders and partners around the world. Brady also oversaw the transformation of the organization’s governance, structure and brands to reflect and clarify the unique role that each organization plays in working for a safer world. In 2022, the UL enterprise launched two independent nonprofit organizations — UL Research Institutes (ULRI) and UL Standards & Engagement (ULSE) — and rolled out new brands for ULRI, ULSE and the enterprise’s testing and certification organization, UL Solutions. Brady, who also served as ULSE’s board chair, will step down from that position as well.

The ULRI board of trustees has initiated a search to identify Mr. Brady’s successor.
